HELIOS® M-DOTS™ Digital CPRI Hybrid & Active DAS
For Multi-Band & Multi-Operator & Multi-Technology
Next-Generation, Fiber-to-Antenna & Fiber-to-Edge Active DAS Platform
Overview
As 5G technology becomes more pervasive worldwide, consumers and business professionals alike expect mobile service with faster speeds, better coverage, and higher quality — anytime and anywhere — including in your building or event venue. By installing the latest distributed antenna system (DAS) technology, you can help ensure that your tenants, visitors, and employees continue to enjoy seamless in-building connectivity. Evolution to 5G promises more capacity and data speed, but to deliver on that promise, the 3GPP has introduced an array of new frequency bands with varying propagation characteristics. Additionally, next-generation mobile technology enables new features and capabilities, such as ultra-reliable low-latency networks, which require substantial changes in network architecture. All of this means that 5G brings increasing complexity to today’s networks.
Helios® Next-Generation Multi-Band & Multi-Operator & Multi-Technology Digital Optical Transport System (M-DOTS™) is the most flexible, scalable and complete hybrid & active DAS solution for addressing coverage and capacity needs for cellular and public safety wireless network. The M-DOTS™ improves wireless network coverage and capacity by extending services from existing cell sites to hard-to-reach areas by digital CPRI distributing coverage from a centralized radio suite.
Utilizing a centralized digital CPRI distributed architecture, Helios® M-DOTS™ is a three-tier architecture consisting of the Radio Access Unit (RAU), CPRI HUB Unit and Active Antenna Units (AAUs) / Macro Remote Radio Units (mRRUs). RF signals from sectorized Base Stations, off-air Repeater, BDAs or combination thereof can be received. In the case of off-air feed, the RAU has the option as Wireless-Access RAU to combine the functions of the off-air Repeater and provide transmission and distribution of radio signals. The signal is filtered and then converted to a digital CPRI data stream. The digital CPRI packet data stream is transported via single mode fiber and received by the remote AAU or Macro RRUs. The AAU/mRRUs then convert the digital CPRI packet data stream back to RF and amplify the signal for delivery to the antennas. On the reverse path (uplink), the AAU/mRRUs and RAU perform the inverse functions and delivery the signals back to the corresponding off-air antenna, BDAs or Base Stations.
The all-digital platform with ultra-wide bandwidth RF front-end design and modular architecture enables multiple band/technologies/operator and network topologies including star, chain and hybrid to cater to different deployment scenarios. These network topologies provide reduced fiber plant usage and installation cost, and effective fiber loop redundancy configurations.
The M-DOTS™ flexibility and scalability offers service provider an optimal solution for multiple applications, such as dense urban centers, dense suburban areas, airports, hospital, campuses, enterprise buildings, subways and tunnels. The M-DOTS™ digital CPRI distributed architecture and small form factor allow service providers or neutral host to cost-effectively increase coverage and capacity in these hard-to-reach areas.

M-DOTS™ Direct-Coupled Type RAU - Radio Access Unit
The 19" rack-mountable M-DOTS™ Direct-Coupled Type RAU (Radio Access Unit) is typically located at a sectorized Base Station or a facility housing a suite of sectorized Base Stations. On the forward path, the RAU receives the RF signals from the sectorized BTS via Directional Coupler or Coaxial Attenuator and digitizes the designated RF bands and digitally transports them over single mode fiber to the distributed AAU/mRRUs. On the reverse path, the RAU receives the digitized RF signals from the remote AAU/mRRUs and converts them back to RF for the Donor BTS.
With ultra-wide bandwidth RF front-end design enables each M-DOTS™ RAU supports up to three RF bands with 2T2R MIMO. All each RF band can be configured to be FDD or TDD mode in factory and supports up to 400MHz bandwidth RF signals in order to be capable of simulcasting signals for multiple bands/technologies/operators and MIMO, even ultra-wide bandwidth requirement for Sub-6GHz 5G NR TDD. Each M-DOTS™ RAU has four 10Gbps SFP+ Digital Optic Ports and supports up to 64 AAU/mRRUs via adding CPRI HUBs by star, chain, ring and hybrid network topologies in some large-scale scenarios, such as airport, high-way, subways, tunnels, campuses and railway station.
The RAU utilizes an embedded central WEB management portal for system configuration and network monitoring. The embedded central WEB management portal collects alarm information from both RAUs and AAU/mRRUs.
